What is a celebrant?

A celebrant is someone who creates and conducts personalized ceremonies. Unlike registrars or religious officiants, we work independently and can craft ceremonies that are completely tailored to you—your words, your style, your story.

What's the difference between a celebrant and a registrar?

Registrars conduct legal ceremonies following a set structure with approved wording. Celebrants create personalized ceremonies without legal restrictions, but in England and Wales, we can't legally marry you. Think of it this way: the registrar does the paperwork, the celebrant does the ceremony you'll actually remember.

Can a celebrant legally marry us?

Not yet in England and Wales, though the law is slowly changing. Most couples do a quick register office signing separately (10 minutes, very straightforward) and then have their "real" ceremony with me. Celebrants in Scotland can conduct legal marriages.

What ceremonies do you offer?

I specialize in weddings, vow renewals, funerals, celebrations of life, ash scattering ceremonies, naming ceremonies, and gender affirmation ceremonies.

How far in advance should we book?

For weddings, I recommend booking 6-12 months ahead, though I've worked with shorter timelines. For funerals, I work with whatever timeline is needed.

We start with a free consultation to see if we're a good fit. Once you book, we have several interviews where I gather your story. I write your ceremony, you review it, we refine it together, and then I deliver it on the day. Simple!

Yes! You'll get to read the full script and we'll make any changes you need. Unlimited revisions until it's perfect.

What if we're not sure what we want?

Most people aren't at the start! I'll guide you through options and possibilities. We'll build your ceremony together based on who you are and what matters to you.

What geographical area do you cover?

I'm based in Pontypool and cover South Wales (including Brecon Beacons, Cardiff, Newport), Bristol and the South West, and the border counties (Herefordshire, Gloucestershire, Shropshire). I'm happy to travel further for the right celebration.

Travel within my regular coverage area is included. For venues further afield, we can discuss travel costs during our initial conversation.

What happens if you're ill on the day?

Weddings are usually 20-30 minutes, though they can be longer. Funerals are typically 20-30 minutes. Naming ceremonies are usually 20-30 minutes. Vow renewals can be 15-30 minutes. We'll discuss timing based on what you want to include.

Yes! That's the beauty of having a celebrant. Outdoor spaces, your garden, barns, castles, community halls, beaches—anywhere meaningful to you.
